Cherry carved Bakelite dress clip

Stunning large Bakelite dress clip in cherry red with deep hand carved decoration and inset round and emerald cut Czech rhinestones.

Circa 1935, probably French. Very good condition overall, some scratches to the plastic, large stones have darkened. 4.5 cm, Unsigned. Strong clawed clip to reverse.

Victorian Chinese carved ivory buckle

Deeply detailed carved ivory belt or sash buckle with roses, daisies, lillies, tulips and exotic fruits. Work of this kind was often carried out in India or the Middle East to western designs, however by the style we believe this to be Chinese.

Original brass fitting, however the long claws of the buckle have been removed, probably so as to be able to use it with materials that would otherwise tear. The remaining folded clip holds most fabrics securly enough.

Circa 1870, very good condition, as noted above. No damage to the Ivory carving. 8.5cm long.

'Fairing' brooch

Twisted rope frame brooch set with a charming original Edwardian photograph of a very young lady in a 'portrait' hat. The hat is set with ostrich feathers and her dark hair set in curls. The photograph is sepia toned with some hand tinting, and sealed behind an enamel layer. Simple 'c'c clasp.

Fairings brooches like this were made by their thousands to be sold at markets, seaside resorts and fairs - your picture could be taken in the morning - and later in the day you could have it set in the brooch or frame of your choice. Ready made brooches like this were also hugely popular, but very few survive.

Risque Rococo enamel box

Museum quailty bronze gilt box decorated with an elegant, rather risque lady dressed in the height of fashion with roses in her hair. The enamel work is very fine, using stippling and wash to create this highly detailed portrait, whose colours remain clear and bright.

The base is decorated with the goddess Hera ready to cut the grain with her sickle, and Chronos, father time, reminding us that life is short.

The box is decorated with hand engraved swirling foliage and still snaps shut tight after so many years. There is no signature or makers mark, however we beleive this to be German. Originally it could have been used as a Bonbonniere, keepsake box or as a vinaigrette - however the original lining or fittings are long gone. We are currently preparing a removable silk lining for this box.

Circa 1770, very good condition, with minor damage to the edge of the enamel and some wear and patches of gilt loss to the base.
